Panchakarma Ayurvedic Treatment

Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word that means “five therapies”. As the name implies, it is an ayurvedic therapy which has five distinct treatment steps. The purpose of Panchakarma is complete detoxification and purification of the body which in turn brings on a heightened sense of mind and body rejuvenation.

The five traditional treatments of Panchakarma are

  • Herbalized oil enemas (Basti)
  • Nasal irrigation (Nasya)
  • Therapeutic Vomiting (Vamana)
  • Purgation (Virechana)
  • Blood Letting (Raktamokshana)

The more uncomfortable processes such as the vamana and the raktamokshana have now been replaced with more gentle, but equally effective therapies like medicated oil massages. Panchakarma is the basic pillar on which other Ayurvedic treatments stand. It lives up to its reputation as the true manifestation of Ayurvedic values.

There are three stages for the overall treatment:

  • Purvakarma - This involves preparatory procedures to help the body to eliminate toxins from the stomach and other surrounding tissue.
  • Pradhanakarma - This is the main treatment which is customized according to the needs of the individual.
  • Paschatkarma - This is the post-treatment care and various do and don’ts to follow as well as the diet regimen.

Panchakarma rejuvenates the body, mind and soul

The Panchakarma treatment rejuvenates the body, mind, and soul. This treatment clears up the toxins that accumulate in our bod over time. Our bodies are designed for efficient waste disposal. But the ‘agni’ that regulates the internal homeostasis of the body become disorganized due to poor diet practices, illnesses, and lifestyle choices. This causes toxins to enter our body and accumulate over time and spread out to various organs, causes diseases that leave us weak and tired.

In Ayurveda, this waste matter is called ‘ama’. The Panchakarma treatment is aimed at removing the excess doshas and correcting imbalances, along with eliminating the harmful ama from our system through different channels of elimination. Panchakarma involves daily massages & oil baths, nasal administrations, and herbal enemas. It purifies the body tissues at a deep level. Panchakarma is the ultimate detoxifying process that offers you one of the best mind-body healing experiences of Ayurveda.
