What is Ayurveda?

Ayurvedic medicine, called Ayurveda in short, was developed by Indian sages 1000s of years ago, before modern research found evidence of the mind-body connection. Ayurveda is considered one of the world's oldest holistic “whole-body” healing systems. Much-respected holistic healing systems such as Greek Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as, Tibetian medicine all have their roots in Ayurvedic therapies. They all contain various concepts that are described in the classical Ayurvedic Medical texts that date back to as early as 6th century BC.

Ayurveda is, in fact, the science of life! ‘Ayur’ means ‘life’ while ‘Veda’ is translated as ‘knowledge’ or ‘science’. Ayurveda offers a body of wisdom that allows us to realize our full human potential while enabling us to stay healthy and dynamic. According to Ayurveda, health is a balanced and active blending of our environment, body, mind, and spirit.Ayurvedic massages are more than just a way to treat illnesses. Ayurveda massage therapy offers a proactive approach to re-balance and restore health. To enhance and maintain our health, various ayurvedic texts lay down guidelines for ideal daily and seasonal routines and diets we should follow, along with behavioral guides, and the proper way to use senses.

The Guiding Principles of Ayurveda

The human body and mind are intricately connected in such a way that the mind has the power to heal and transform the body. Incorrect diets are believed to be behind seventy percent of ailments while the remaining causes include lifestyle, negative emotions and thoughts, hereditary or genetic issues and energy imbalances. Ayurvedic treatments are aimed at revealing the deeper and primary causes of an individual’s health conditions. At birth, every human being is blessed with a unique proportion of the three doshas or biologic principles namely - vata, pitta, kapha. These represent our genetic code and they have a major role in the formation of our mental and physical characteristics.

The two key guiding principles of Ayurveda are:

  • There is an inextricable connection between the mind and the body.
  • Nothing has more strength and power to transform and heal the body than one’s mind.

According to Ayurveda, each human being is made of five elements (air, space, water, fire and earth) which when well-balanced create health and when imbalanced, create disease. These basic elements combine into three doshas (constitutions): pitta, kapha and vata. Well, the unique combination of these three doshas in each person has a particular influence on his or her mental, physical and emotional tendencies. By determining which dosha(s) are dominant, a person can make the most appropriate diet and lifestyle choices which will eventually help maintain balance and promote overall health and well being.

Why Ayurveda?

Effective, Unique & Awe-Inspiring

Ayurveda is, at present, emerging as a sustainable healthcare solution. Well, what makes Ayurveda pretty much effective, unique and inspiring?

  • The key aspect of Ayurveda is that it addresses the root cause of a disease and imbalance instead of just considering symptom management.
  • The system focuses on strengthening the innate capacity of the body to prevent disease and fight against them.
  • In Ayurveda, every individual is treated as a distinct person and is offered customized wellness solutions.
  • It has a truly holistic definition of wellness and health that includes the mind, body, soul and senses.
  • In fact, there is a unique sub-branch of Ayurveda that exclusively focuses on concrete ways to be healthy.
  • The science of Ayurveda empowers an individual to take health into his or her own hands.
  • Safety and efficacy of Ayurvedic treatments seem to be established based on centuries of unprejudiced clinical experience of the ancient physicians; modern day clinical trials cannot match it when it comes to assessing long term safety and efficacy profile.
  • Ayurveda provides safe and effective management of various chronic diseases like joint pain, severe wheezing and other breathing problems, hormonal imbalance disorders/diseases in women, stomach-related problems, etc.

What’s more, Ayurveda actually shows us that there is a deep part of each one of us - our innermost essence that is always completely healthy.

Learning and practicing Ayurveda means connecting with countless unbelievable, drug-free ways to totally experience wholeness. Well, grounded in unshakeable principles which have survived the test of time, this wonderful healing system is just as valuable and beneficial today as it was centuries ago.

Tri Dosa - PITTA

Pitta

Pitta’s elemental makeup consists of fire and water. Pitta regulates all the metabolic processes in the body as well as body temperature & hormonal balance. Thirst, Hunger, and intelligence are associated with Pitta.

Tri Dosa - VATA

Vata

Vata means to blow or move like the wind. Consisting of the elements air & ether, it is the principle force of motion in the body and mind. Vata is responsible for our energy and movement as well as for nerve impulses. Speech, Breath, circulation, and digestion are all the manifestation of Vata.

Tri Dosa - KAPHA

Kapha

Kapha governs the structure of the body. Kapha meets the elements of earth and water. Kapha controls growth, weight, lubrication for the joints and lungs. Kapha is responsible for solidity and all structures as well as for the right amount of body fluids.

Dinacharya

AWell, in Ayurveda, an everyday ritual of self-care is termed as Dinacharya. Dinacharya means “daily routine” in Sanskrit language. According to Ayurveda, to be healthy optimally, we must tune our bodies in accordance to the master cycle of nature which eventually regulates different other rhythms.

Morning Dinacharya
  • Wake up early in the morning, before sunrise.
  • Drink a glass of warm water to help in elimination process.
  • Wash your eyes and face followed by brushing your teeth using herbal tooth powder or paste and scraping your tongue with a tongue cleaner to remove toxin accumulation in the tongue.
  • Empty your bladder and bowels within the first hour of having woke up.
  • Massage the forehead, scalp, temples, hand and feet using sesame oil for about five minutes.
  • Do 10-15 minutes of yoga and/or 15-30 minutes of brisk walking or any other exercise. Include breathing exercises as well.
  • Shower or bathe in warm water. Wear clean clothes
  • Sit in meditation for a few minutes to explore your ‘self’ and increase awareness.
  • Breakfast must be warm, wholesome and nourishing.
  • You can then continue with your work or study until noon.
Midday Dinacharya
  • Make lunch the day’s largest meal. Don’t snack until supper. Walk for 10 to 15 minutes at a slow pace after lunch in order to facilitate digestion.
  • You can take a power nap of 15-20 minutes after lunch. Anything longer than that is not recommended in Ayurveda.
Evening Dinacharya
  • Evening is time for meditation, breathing exercise and some yoga.
  • Have your supper as early as 7 pm. Dinner should be earlier and lighter.
  • Go to bed before 10 pm.
